International Day of Transgender Remembrance: The LGBTTI community all over the world remembers and honours those who died from anti-transgender violence on the 20th of November. Even today, the deaths of those based on anti-transgender hatred or prejudice are largely ignored. Hamilton, the city with a statue of Riff-Raff in its CDB, will join in the world-wide commemoration this year for the first time. There will be a quiet gathering at the Riff-Raff statue, on our main street, Victoria Street, on the 20th of November 2008 from 8.30pm onwards. For four years the Riff-Raff statue is a visible part of Hamilton City. And in this way, the organiser Lisa Stone wants to create visibility for anti-transgender violence and genderbashing and honour all transgender people that were killed in violent attacks. Lisa Stone is a researcher on transgender issues and organises this Remembrance gathering with support from Agender Waikato and Hamilton Pride. She hopes that this year's Remembrance Day will become a recurrent event in Hamilton's LGBTTI community. For further information, please feel free to e-mail her.
